The Procedure

The regulatory body where you hold your registration must verify your abroad nursing registration for the Council. The Council must receive this verification directly from that authority. You must also submit the original of a police certificate, which must be no older than six months at the time the council receives it, as proof that you have never been convicted of a crime.

Nurses who have obtained registration or enrollment in other countries may apply for nursing registration or enrollment. Prior to beginning practise in New Zealand, New Zealand must apply to the Nursing Council of New Zealand for admission to the register/roll. To handle applications from outside of New Zealand, the Nursing Council of New Zealand includes a department for international registration

Assessments

The Nursing Council evaluates each application individually and does not use a system of reciprocal registration or enrolment, unless the applicant satisfies the conditions of the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act, or TTMR Act (1998). The following are the main criteria for registration:

The candidate has completed a nursing or midwifery programme that matches the requirements for length and content. the New Zealand equivalent curriculum and is capable of meeting the requirements for registration or enrollment.

The applicant has five years of nursing or midwifery experience.

When English is not the applicant’s native language, the applicant has provided the Nursing Council with evidence of his or her competence to speak and write in English that was achieved within the last two years. The CGNFS, IELTS, OET, and as part of a competency course are examples of recognised tests.

The Department of Nursing within a New Zealand educational institution may require applicants who don’t fulfil the standards for nursing registration to complete additional experience and instruction. Negotiating the terms for the training and experience, as well as alerting the Nursing Council of any agreements reached, are the applicant’s responsibilities. Nursing Registration for Australian Applicants

The TTMRA (Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act) went into effect on May 1st, 1998.  The Nursing Council of New Zealand will accept TTMRA applications from applicants who have nursing registration in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory, Queensland, and Tasmania. Application forms are available online or by mail from the NZNC website. Until Western Australia joins the Arrangement, applications for nurses from that state will be handled in accordance with the foreign registration process.

Getting New Zealand’s Midwifery Registration

Your charge will be adjusted in accordance with the length of your practising certificate. Fees must be paid either by including a check in the mail with your completed practising certificate form or by include credit card information on your application form. If you choose to pay using a credit card, please take extra care to record the information accurately to prevent processing errors.

A name must be listed on the Register of Midwives and all practising midwives in New Zealand must be registered with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand. once logged in, Applying Australians

Under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition (TTMR) Act 1997, applicants who are licenced to practise midwifery in all Australian states, with the exception of Western Australia, may submit an application for registration with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand. You can get application forms for mutual recognition from the MCNZ website. Western Australian midwives will need to submit an application and be evaluated as such in order to practise internationally. On the MCNZ website, application forms can be downloaded. As an alternative, you could register in another Australian state before submitting an application for mutual recognition in New Zealand.

Foreign Applicants

Western Australia-based and international applicants for registration as midwives will be evaluated in accordance with Midwifery Council policy.
